St. George’s Community Hub Appeal
Patron: Sir Alan Craft

St. George’s Church in Jesmond has been part of the local landscape since 1888 –a Grade I listed distinctive Arts and Crafts gift of local shipbuilder Charles Mitchell. The neighbouring Grade II Church Hall was funded by local parishioners. The Green, which links the two buildings, was later purchased through further community support.

Today, the church, hall, and surrounding grounds are well-used and valued by the local community – but their facilities no longer meet modern needs. Our major improvement project aims to create a Community Hub in the heart of Jesmond, including an extension to the church, a full refurbishment of the Church Hall, and improvements to the parking and the Green.

Phase 1 fundraising has raised more than £320,000 and we are now applying to the largest trusts for comparable grants to compete the Church Extension in 2026. For details of the Church Extension, please click here.

Phase 2 was launched on 31st May 2025, focusing on the renovation of the Grade II listed hall (for details click here) to form a new Community Hall including:

  • A fully refurbished, modern interior with updated facilities
  • Two new halls and an upstairs room, each with independent access to shared amenities
  • Improved sound insulation
  • A larger, staircase accessible upper floor
  • WiFi and modern IT infrastructure
  • Energy efficient heating and lighting
  • A new external link to the Green

Upcoming fundraising events are already scheduled as part of Phase 2. Please save the dates!

  • Wednesday July 9th, doors open 19:00: Sax on the Tyne. Performance by the Community Saxophone Band and other local musicians
  • Saturday September 27th, doors open 18:45: “Midnight Miley. A high-energy Miley Cyrus tribute experience
  • Saturday November 22nd: Ceilidh with the popular Ceilidh Knights band. An evening of music, dancing, and community celebration with hot supper.
