St George's Pantomime.
The Pantomime has been staged for a number of years and is something of a St George’s tradition as well as a major Jesmond social event. Originally the panto was held on the evening of the feast of Candlemas but has in recent years been presented on two nights (Friday and Saturday) at the beginning of February. Its popularity has grown and tickets are much in demand at a bargain price of about £5 which includes an interval glass of wine and a piece of pudding - early booking is essential.

The panto involves a large number of ‘actors’ of all ages drawn from the congregations of St George’s and St Hilda’s and for some of them is the highlight (!) of their year. It is certainly a valued way of bringing together congregation, families and friends. Audience participation is encouraged and a good family night out is guaranteed.

The theme of the panto is kept a close secret – cast members are sworn to secrecy – until the event itself (this is to enable the author to change his mind if necessary). Recent productions have been variations on Dick Whittington, Robin Hood, Treasure Island, Cinderella and Jack and the Beanstalk. The show is conceived, written and produced in-house. New actors and production staff are always welcome; normally there is a read-through before Christmas and rehearsals start in earnest in the new year.
The pantomime experience is enhanced by the enthusiastic participation of the Pantomime band which was originally formed for this purpose, see  the Pantomime band page for more information.

Mothering Sunday Lunch
On the fourth Sunday of every other Lent, the ladies of St George's (together with their friends and relations - even children) are treated (allegedly) by some of the more gullible men to a marvellous midday meal.  This particular contribution to the celebration of Mothering Sunday began in the 1980s when a previous church warden, trained in the art of 'folk camp' cooking, aimed to exercise his newly amassed culinary skills on those of the congregation that could be temporally confined to the church hall.  Since then the event has recurred on most 'even-numbered' years, a year of 'plenty' being followed by a fallow period necessary to restore digestion and taste and sufficient to distort the memory of those who took part.  A hint of what might be in store is offered by the attached menu.
