Making Worship Happen

A body of reliable, talented and dedicated individuals work together to ensure the smooth running of Sunday, and indeed midweek, worship.

There are  a number of groups of people whose work, often unseen, contributes to the beauty and cohesion of worship at St George's.

If you think you could contribute and would like to join one of the rotas, please contact the parish office or download and complete a Time and Talents form.

Servers

The Servers at St Georges are a group of youngsters made up from the congregation and choir (practically all of whom currently also go to Sunday Knights).

They are involved in the 9.30am Sunday Eucharist service and form an integral part of the service in providing the lead of the procession at the beginning and end of, and participation through the service as assistants to the president, as well as clearing away after the service.

Servers are also involved in "Special" Services at particular times of the church calendar (eg Christmas and Holy week, sometimes falling in the evening).

The servers comprise 1 Crucifer (the cross bearer) and 2 Acolytes (candle holders). All servers are located in the Chancel or sanctuary with the choir during the service. Each server is robed with an amice, alb and girdle in a similar way to choir robes.

Depending on numbers at any one time, each member of the servers has on average to take part in one - two services out of four every month - the more servers the less times per month so we are always on the look out for new bodies!! A new rota is prepared for four months in advance which hopefully allows for swapping of Sundays if so necessary.

The general age for becoming a server is 9 years old (for height and concentration!) and there is no upper age limit - this is usually 18 when university or college beckons as we currently have no adults.

If you would like to know more or would like to join our happy band, please contact Derek at servers@stgeorgesjesmond.org.uk

After Service Coffee

Coffee is served after the 9.30 service on Sunday and on Thursday mornings. Although there is a rota for Sunday mornings, Thursdays are more ad hoc.  Rosie Wilson organises the coffee rota.

Flowers

A group of artistic and talented women enhance the beauty of our worship with floral displays which are often awe-inspiring.

If you would like to donate the flowers on any particular Sunday as a memorial please do get in touch with Vera Friberg Rodgers who organises the flower rota via the parish office.

The rota is available here.

Readers

The people who read the lessons in church on Sundays are volunteers. If you would like to contribute to this ministry please do contact Roy Sanderson who co-odinates the readers rota.

The rota is available here.

Intercessors

The Sunday intercessions are led by members of the congregation.  There is a little training to help those who wish to contribute to the intercessions and lots of resources.  Roy Sanderson also co-ordinates the intercessors.

Welcomers

The team of people who welcome the congregation on Sundays (traditionally known as sidesmen, although including many women) is led by the churchwardens.

There are separate rotas for each of the 3 Sunday morning services - 8.00am, 9.30am and 11.30am.

Sacristan

The sacristans prepare and maintain the linen and silver for the altars and for use in the Eucharist.

They ensure that everything is in place for the Eucharist celebration to be beautiful.
