Bell Ringing
The bells have been ringing at St George's for well over 100 years, being only a few years younger than the church itself. There are 8 bells, the heaviest being 18 cwt, if you are of that age, or 0.9 tonnes if you are younger. Bell weights are traditionally given in cwt, even today.
Full circle bellringing is an ancient art found only in the English speaking parts of the world. On the Continent they only swing or chime the bells and not in an orderly fashion. The art can be learned by anyone from early teens to those who have retired. There is great camaraderie between ringers and many spend their evenings visiting other towers in the area or their holidays visiting other parts of the country to ring.
We are always on the lookout for recruits. We practice on a Friday evening from 7:45 to 9:00 and we ring for service on a Sunday from 9:00 to 9:30 with a further short burst afterwards. It is not physically demanding and you do not need to be musical.
If you would like to see what it is about then give us a visit on a Friday or a Sunday. Or telephone Geoff White on 0191 285 1405 after 6:30 weekdays or on weekends.
