The Friends of St George's, Jesmond

The Friends of St George's, Jesmond was founded on St George's Day 2008 in order to expand the role of St George's in the community, and to support future plans to maintain and renovate the fabric of the church and its ancillary buildings. The Friends received their charitable status in October 2010. (Registered Charity No 1138789)

Objectives of the Friends

The Friends has been set up for the benefit of the general public, to assist in the care and preservation of the historic buildings and grounds of St George's Church, Jesmond and the promotion of facilities and events in those buildings, with a view to enhancing the lives of those who participate.

The establishment of The Friends of St George's has been an exciting event in Jesmond, and we do hope that you will support it by becoming a member.

Advance Notice of Friends' Events

Saturday 28th January at 7.00pm

A talk by David Saunders entitled Charles Mitchell and Russia's first Ironclads.

Charles Mitchell was one of the few shipbuilders in the world who could build warships out of iron rather than wood. Russia could not match recent Western innovations in shipbuilding and needed foreign help with their naval reforms. The Tsar invited Mitchell to St Petersburg. Mitchell's Russian experience put him in a position to expand his yard on Tyneside and so to become the partner of Tyneside's armaments manufacturer, Sir William (later Lord) Armstrong.

Friday 24th February - Italian Evening in the church hall

Other events planned include: Vintage Clothing Event; Dinner at Trinity House; Family Fun Day

West WindowSt George's West Window
Renewing Our Inheritance

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to this project in any way.  The target of £57,000 has now been raised, with the Friends contributing over £10,000 of this.

This huge and unique window is an integral part of the design of the church, drawing the eye up to heaven and the coming of Christ in glory at the end of time.   The window was beginning to collapse under its own weight and letting in water, it was also damaging the stone in which it is set.   The glass was cracked in places and the lead work needed to be renewed.

Work started at the beginning of January and was completed in time for Easter 2011.
