Charities
We aim to give 10% of our Planned Giving income to charities at home and abroad. The charities supported in 2009 are listed below.
In addition to donating funds to these charities, several times a year the church arranges collections of goods for Newcastle’s West End Refugee Service (www.wers.org.uk). Members of the congregation help with the house-to-house collections in aid of Christian Aid (www.christianaid.org.uk ) in May and there are various other special events, such as concerts, in support of this charity. Members of the church have spear-headed fund-raising to provide medical education for students at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College in Tanzania. There are of course occasional collections, quizzes or other events in aid of other charities.
Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College
The KCMC fund at St George’s was established in June 2001 to assist with tuition fees for undergraduates in medicine at the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical College in Tanzania (www.kcmc.ac.tz). It was felt that the sponsorship of medical education would have the widest and most far-reaching benefit on the standards of medical care in Tanzania, which is amongst the poorest countries of the world.
Since 2001, six undergraduates, including Theophil Shangali - our first student, who visited St George’s when he was doing his elective placement at North Tyneside Hospital, have graduated successfully in medicine.
We are currently funding a further three medical undergraduates through their training; we are also considering the possibilities of extending the sponsorship to postgraduate training, as well as giving assistance this year to students of medicine and allied disciplines, who have been unable to remit their fees for one reason or another.
If you would like further details concerning the sponsorship programme or a form for donation, please contact Enid Pearson, through the Parish Office.
