Bells
The Bells at St George's Church.
The bells have been ringing at St George's for well over 100 years, being only a few years younger than the church itself. There are 8 bells, the heaviest being 18 cwt, if you are of that age, or 0.9 tonnes if you are younger. Bell weights are traditionally given in cwt, even today.
Full circle bellringing is an ancient art found only in the English speaking parts of the world. On the Continent they only swing or chime the bells and not in an orderly fashion. The art can be learned by anyone from early teens to those who have retired. There is great camaraderie between ringers and many spend their evenings visiting other towers in the area or their holidays visiting other parts of the country to ring.
