St George's has a great range of occasional (see 'Special Events' page) and regular events and groups which are open to everyone.

Dates for events are available on the Calendar page, contacts and details for specific enquiries are available through the Parish Office. Many more activities can be seen on the 'Youth', 'Music', 'Community' and 'Friends' webpages listed above. The notice sheet for the current week can be found on the Downloads page.

Fairtrade Coffee Mornings.
fairtrade logoThe very popular Fairtrade Morning Coffee came about due to the positive feedback received following a coffee morning for 'Macmillan Cancer Relief' and was launched with another fundraising coffee morning for 'Action Aid'.

It takes place in the Winskell Room of the Church Hall on Friday mornings 9.30am - 12.30pm throughout the year and on Saturday afternoons 2 - 4.30pm during the summer months. We serve a range of Fairtrade teas and coffees as well as homemade cakes and scones, all made with Fairtrade ingredients.
Ninety per cent of the income generated goes to St. George's with the remaining ten per cent being given to charities.

Loose Ladies

Loose LadiesThe ‘Loose Ladies’ was formed in a moment of sheer and sudden brilliance by Enid Pearson, aided and abetted by Barbara Peacock. The idea is that those people (male or female of any age) who momentarily find an unfilled space in their social diaries/calendars are able to join in some form of frivolous (or otherwise) entertainment for an odd evening/afternoon (or any other time of day). There is no formal joining or leaving ceremony; in other words one can drop in and out as one wishes, no questions asked. The entertainment enjoyed by this valiant band stretches from a meal in some local hostelry to a trip to the cinema, theatre or art gallery – or anything else really. The group welcomes new ideas.

You are advised to scan the weekly notices carefully for up and coming events, lest you miss out on something you will later regret.

Church Walks
The Church Walks take place about once a month, on Saturdays. We try to plan dates so that they don’t conflict  with Church cleaning or maintenance mornings. We meet at the Church Hall at 10 am but we may change to 9.30 am so that we can accommodate longer car journeys to reach maybe the Cheviots or the moors or higher up the Northumberland coast.

We meet at the Church Hall, see how many walkers we have, then sort out car shares and lifts. If you don’t have a car or don’t drive we will find you a lift. Numbers vary from 5/6 to 14/15.
You need the usual things – walking boots or shoes, windproof and waterproof gear, packed lunch and plenty to drink. Different members of the group lead walks and we try to arrange a short walk (4– 6 miles) and a longer one (8-10 miles)

All the walks are wonderful!  Some are exciting, the middle of the moors in the mist; some adventurous, clambering up a steep hill in a forest under low branches; some with added interest, passing working shire horses, happening upon a gypsy caravan restorer who demonstrated applying gold leaf to a cart wheel.

Book Club
Book Club meetings are open to all and are not exclusive to members of St. George's Church; an interest in books is all that is required.  Meetings are held approximately once a month and members take turns to host them.  A wide variety of books have been discussed including 'Middlemarch' (George Eliot), 'Rapture' (Carol Ann Duffy), 'The Book Thief' (Markus Zusak) and 'Love and War in the Apennines' (Eric Newby).  Details are printed in the Notice Sheet.LINK

Bridge Group
A Bridge Group has evolved from the Book Club aimed at those with little or no experience, but who wish to play. The emphasis is on learning and encouragement; those of us who are regular players support those with less experience.

Film and Faith
An opportunity to watch films and to reflect on how they inform our faith.
Films are shown once a month on the second Friday of the month. The film starts at 8.15pm, and a discussion follows.

Rounders
2009 Rounders TeamSt. George's holds occasional summer 'sporting' events, usually as part of a picnic, barbecue or other social event and sometimes in partnership with other groups. Sporting prowess is much less important than the willingness to have a go; all ages and abilities are welcome to join in.

Church Maintenance

St George’s is blessed with beautiful buildings and extensive grounds. Development and maintenance is delegated by the P.C.C., to the Fabric Committee which meets monthly.

Any major work is carried out by specialist craftsmen, because of listed building status but a lot of work is also done by volunteer members of the congregation.

Decorating, grass cutting, gardening, cleaning, DIY tasks etc. are regularly carried out either on designated maintenance mornings or on an ad hoc basis.
